Work of 1913 Baseball Candidates

At a meeting of candidates for the Freshman baseball team held in the Assembly Room of the Union last evening 49 members of the class were present. Captain C. L. Lanigan '10 and Coach Pieper, of the University team, spoke briefly of the work that will be required of the candidates and of the spirit in which this work should be done. Lanigan announced that all candidates would be expected to report to R. W. Hall '10 in the Baseball Cage this afternoon at 4 o'clock, with the exception of the battery candidates, who will continue to report with the University battery squad at 2 o'clock. He urged all members of the class who have any baseball ability to report.

Coach Pieper emphasized the attitude which the men should take toward athletics. It is the aim of the team to win, but to win only in a sportsmanlike manner. Furthermore, the candidates should not become discouraged if they are not at the head of those trying for their particular position. A strong team can be developed only when each man puts forth his best effort, even though he be the poorest and most inexperienced of the candidates.
