Kittrede to Coach Battery Squad

The University baseball management has engaged Malachi J. Kittredge, a former catcher on teams of the National and the American Leagues, to coach the battery candidates for a period of five weeks, beginning on Monday, February 14. Having a professional catcher is a new departure in Harvard baseball, as the early coaching of the battery candidates in previous years has always been done by a pitcher. Last year the place was held by Mathewson of the New York Nationals. The University management believes, however, that an experienced catcher can accomplish more by his coaching than a pitcher, and is confident that the experiment will prove a success.

Kittredge played for many years on American teams of the two major leagues, among them being the Chicago, Boston, and Washington National teams. In recent years he has managed and played on various teams of the smaller eastern leagues.

Pfeffer, a pitcher of the Chicago National staff, is practicing in the Cage with the battery candidates for the present, and is giving some attention to the work of the pitchers. He is working largely to condition himself, and will practice here only a short time longer.
