To the Editors of the CRIMSON:
This year Memorial Hall has been the scene of continued disturbances. The mere presence of visitors in the gallery has been sufficient to incite, not only the sharp clinking of glasses, but the throwing of food as well. Such demonstrations come almost exclusively from Freshmen and those unacquainted with the traditions of Memorial Hall. Outsiders, unacquainted with Harvard undergraduates except by a visit to Memorial during meal hours, must, indeed, carry away with them a most flattering opinion of Harvard manners.
There are infrequent occasions when, for instance, a man keeps on his hat or when a visitor acts in an otherwise unconventional manner, that some expression from the diners is not wholly out of place. But this monotonous series of noises without reason is senseless, tiresome, and disgraceful. If these outbursts come from a wish that the gallery be closed, let some other action be taken. Last year it became necessary for the Dining Council to shut the gallery on two occasions, but both times it later revoked its action because of the strong opposing sentiment.
If this year's members feel differently, let them refer the matter to the proper authority. However, it is inevitable that if the present policy of demonstration without cause is continued, the gallery will be closed permanently, and without notice. E. G. MEARS '10.
