Yesterday the candidates for the University crew reported for the first day of fall rowing. Three eights were made up and sent up-stream for a short paddle, the work being directed by Coach Wray from the launch "John Harvard." The four veterans of last year's eight which won from Yale last June, Newton, Cutler, Strong and Metcalf, were placed in the waist of the boat at stroke, 7, 6, and 5 respectively. Lincoln and Meyer at 4 and bow rowed 4 and 3 respectively in last year's Freshman eight. Balch at 2 rowed 3 in the University four which won from Yale last year. Hooper, who rowed 3 yesterday, has been a member of the University squad for the past two years and rowed 7 on his Freshman eight. C. Abeles coxswained the Freshman eight last June. Goodale, who stroked and captained the 1913 crew, was unable to report yesterday on account of a slight sickness. He is expected to report at the end of the week, when he will probably be put in at stroke, Newton replacing Lincoln at 4. Although the boat was rather unsteady on its keel, the University eight rowed fairly well together and showed good blade work for the first day out in a new order. The probable return of L. Withington '11 in the spring should greatly strengthen the eight and make the prospects for a fast eight better than ever.
The orders:
University crew--Stroke, Newton; 7, Cutler; 6, Strong; 5, Metcalf; 4, Lincoln; 3, Hooper; 2, Balch; bow, Meyer; cox., C. Abeles.
Second crew--Stroke, S. O. Richardson; 7, Nelson; 6, Stratton; 5, Peabody; 4, Hoar; 3, Warren; 2, Sullivan; bow, Wiggins; cox., Voorhees.
Third crew--Stroke, Davis; 7, Anderson; 6, Weston; 5, Beane; 4, R. S. Parker; 3, Morgan; 2, Shillito; bow, G. C. Cutler; cox., A. Abeles.
