The University football squad was given a hard afternoon's work yesterday, when, after the usual signal practice, it lined up against the second team and later played ten and fifteen-minute halves with a picked team of veteran players from the Law School, winning the latter game, 6 to 0, on two drop-kicks by Lewis. T. Frothingham, H. C. Lewis, O'Flaherty, Perkins, Potter, P. D. Smith, and Wigglesworth were absent from the squad. None of these, however, is expected to be out of the game for any length of time.

In the eight-minute scrimmage with the second team the play was often interrupted by the coaches, who spent much time correcting individual faults. By the use of line plays the first team worked the ball to the second's 35-yard line, whence Lewis missed an attempted drop-kick. Frothingham was slightly injured at this point and was replaced by Tryon.

At 4 o'clock the University team lined up against the Law School team, all the regular backfield being replaced by substitutes. This fact was evident when the University team attempted to advance the ball, their opponents being much more successful at gaining through the tackle and guard positions. Philbin and Pfeiffer, especially, did excellent work in the backfield, Philbin's speed around end and Pfeiffer's ability to pick holes on tackle plays giving the University line its severest test of the season. The Law School line was easily the heaviest yet encountered, and provided the first opportunity to estimate the real strength of the Harvard line. As in previous games, it proved practically impregnable while intact; but, toward the latter part of the game, when a whole new line was put in, Pfeiffer had much less difficulty in gaining through the line, while Philbin made several substantial gains through a broken field. Fish and Logan in the line also became much more effective.

In the first few minutes of play neither side could gain. Finally Tryon kicked to Moore, who fumbled the ball on the Law School's 20-yard line. Lewis recovered it and, after two plays failed to gain, he scored three points by a dropkick from the 18-yard line. After the kick-off the University team started to rush the ball from its 25-yard line but the Law School defence braced and Tryon kicked to Moore, who again fumbled, allowing Withington to recover the ball and run to the Law School's 45-yard line before he was downed. Several line plays by Wendell and a forward pass from Gardner to Lewis advanced the ball to the 25-yard line, whence Lewis scored again on a drop-kick.

In the second half there was no further scoring, although toward the end of the game the University team had the ball on its opponents' 10-yard line. The feature of the half was a 50-yard run by Corbett, the University team having recovered the ball on downs on its 35-yard line. Running from a kick formation, Corbett circled left end, reaching the Law School's 25-yard line before he was caught by Hoar. The re- mainder of the game consisted chiefly in an exchange of punts, several fumbles, and increasing gains by the Law School backs.
