About 40 candidates for the Freshman crew reported for voluntary practice on the machines at the Newell boathouse yesterday afternoon. No attempt was made to grade the men, each candidate being given individual attention by Coaches Wray and Stephenson. Several members of the University crew, including E. C. Bacon '10, who will have entire charge of the Freshman rowing until the election of a captain, were present to assist in the coaching by illustrating the stroke on the machines. Besides the Freshman candidates, eight members of the University squad practiced on the machines.
The tank will be opened on Monday, and candidates will be advanced according to their ability. Practice will continue on every afternoon, except Saturday, from 2 to 6 o'clock. No attempt will be made to grade the material until after the mid-year examinations.
