First Meeting of Debating Club

The Harvard Debating Club held a very successful first meeting in the Assembly Room of the Union yesterday evening, at which G. P. Gardner, Jr., '10 presided. Papers on "The Private Dormitories and College Solidarity" were read by G. L. Harding '10, W. Lippmann '10, T. T. Scudder '10, R. H. Smith '10, and P. Wyman '10. A paper by J. S. Reed '10, who was unable to be present was read by T. M. Gregory '10, president of the club. The floor was then thrown open for short speeches.

The discussion of the subject, which is certainly a delicate one, was marked by frankness and breadth of view. One of the speakers said that if the Debating Club existed as a clearing house for ideas and prejudices of men in different college groups, the distinctness of those groups or cliques would soon disappear. The meeting last night showed marked evidence of a step toward the realization of such a purpose.
