The second game between the Harvard and Yale freshman baseball teams, which was scheduled for last Saturday afternoon, was cancelled on account of rain. The game began in a pouring rain and, as there were no signs of clearing, it was called off at the end of the first half of the first inning. The Yale team could not stay over until today, and no other game will be arranged. As the Freshman team won the first game of the series, played in New Haven a week ago last Tuesday, by the score of 6 to 4, it has won the series.
The Freshmen have had an unusually successful season this year, having won six out of the eight regular games played, tied one, and lost one. They have scored 61 runs to 19 for their opponents and as a rule have been exceptionally fast in their fielding. In batting they have outhit the opposing teams two to one, securing hits when hits were needed.
Candidates for the team were called out in the middle of February, and practice was held regularly in the Cage until the field was in proper condition. Up to the first practice game, which Dorchester High School won 2 to 1, the team did not develop as rapidly as expected. However, in the last practice game the University second team was beaten 4 to 3 in an exciting ninth inning rally.
Of the scheduled games the Exeter game was the first one of importance, as both Somerville High School and English High School were easily defeated. In the Exeter game the Freshmen won by the score of 4 to 2, the fielding being especially fast. At Hotchkiss the Freshmen were held to an eleven inning tie, 3 to 3, but Pomfret was easily defeated 20 to 3. At Andover the Freshman team suffered their only defeat in a sensational game in which the Freshmen played the best, ball of the season. At New Haven, in the first game of the series, they defeated Yale 6 to 4 in a hard-fought game, and a week ago last Saturday, closed the season successfully by shutting out the Cornell freshmen 12 to 0.
The following have won their Freshman baseball numerals: Richard Cedric Babson, of Cambridge; Robert Murray Blackall, of Cambridge; Sherman Hoar Bowles, of Springfield; Thomas Joseph Campbell, of Gardner; William Merritt Conant, Jr., of Boston; John Rollin Desha, of Hilo, Hawaii; Harry Reginald Howe, of Watertown; Arthur James, Kelly, of Roxbury; Joseph Patrick Kennedy, of East Boston; Robert Sturgis Potter, of Philadelphia, Pa.; Richard Bowditch Wigglesworth, of Milton; Eric Seymour Winston, of New York, N. Y.
