WILLIAMS BEATEN, 2 TO 1

The University baseball team won a thirteen inning game from Williams yesterday afternoon by the score of 2 to 1. Both sides scored in the second inning, but after that the score remained tied until the last of the thirteenth, when Hicks singled and Harvey brought him in with a hit over the centre-fielder's head. Hicks and Templeton were the opposing pitches throughout the game.

The University team was much more alive than in Wednesday's contest, but did not really wake up until the game was well advanced. The last few innings were intensely exciting and were full of spectacular incidents. The playing was far from perfect, but there was plenty of life and determination. The outfield contributed some of the finest plays seen on Soldiers Field this year. In the first of the thirteenth Harvey sprinted to deep left centre and pulled down a hard drive of Wadsworth's. In the tenth Harvey made a swift and accurate throw to Currier off Young's hit that held Hamilton on third and gave Currier a chance to throw Young out at second. Dana and Aronson also did their share to prevent runs. With three on bases and one out in the ninth, Templeton knocked a fly to right field. A run seemed a certainty, but Aronson was so quick with his throw that the runner was obliged to stay at third. Again in the eleventh Templeton singled to left with a man on second, but the run was prevented by Dana's rapid return of the ball. Currier played a better game behind the bat than on the day before. He caught a remarkable number of foul flies, seven in all. Hicks was a little unsteady at times, but as usual finished strongly.

Williams started out well in the first inning, when the first man up hit over second base and the next man sacrificed. The two following men were easy outs, however, and Williams was obliged to wait till another inning. Hicks' passed the first man in the second inning. A grounder to Lanigan by Templeton resulted in a put-out at second and would have been a double if the bag had been covered sooner. Templeton was successful in stealing second as the throw was bad. Lambie then struck out, but Shons was safe on Simons's low throw to Brown. This placed Templeton on third and a double steal was immediately attempted. Currier threw to Simons to catch Shons. Simons ran him towards first and then threw to Brown, who returned the ball to Crocker. Templeton saw his opportunity and dashed for home. Crocker's throw was too late to catch him and the run was scored.

Williams got a man to third in the seventh inning on a hit to right field, an out, and a stolen base after Currier's catch of a difficult foul fly over by the first base fence. Currier made a wonderfully accurate throw to Lanigan after the catch, but the umpire called the runner safe on a close decision. The next man retired the side by giving Currier another chance on a foul fly.

In the eight Brown reached first for the third time and the hit and run game was tried without success, as Hicks failed to hit the ball and Brown was out on the catcher's throw to second base. Hick's subsequent hit went for naught as Lanigan flied out to right field. Williams made a valiant attempt to win the game in the ninth inning, but the fielding of the University team pulled Hicks out of a bad hole. Two hits and a base on balls filled the bases with only one out. Templeton then sent a liner to Aronson and a run was prevented by the latter's throw. Lambie sent up a high fly over second base that looked for a moment like a Texas leaguer, but Simons ran back for it and retired--the side. In the last of the ninth the University team went out in order, and the game went to extra innings.

Williams was prevented from scoring in the tenth and eleventh innings by good throws from Harvey and Dana. In the twelfth and thirteenth innings the tide turned in favor of the University team. Both times Williams failed to get a man to first. In the tenth Aronson astonished the Williams fielders by bunting down the third-base line. The Pitcher and third-baseman watched the ball in amazement and made no attempt to field it. Aronson stole second, and after Simons had sent a fly to right field, Dana was passed. Another inning was made necessary, however, as Crocker struck out. Brown opened the last half of the thirteenth with a fly to centre field. Hicks then met the ball squarely for a hit over second base. Lanigan was out at first on a hard hit ball to the pitcher, but Hicks reached second on the play. Harvey then drove the ball over the centre-fielder's head and Hicks came in with the winning run.
