In its first long race this year the Freshman crew was defeated by the second University crew yesterday afternoon in a mile and a half race in the basin. The crews started at the Cottage Farm Bridge and finished about a quarter of a mile below the Harvard Bridge, where the rough water made further rowing impossible. At this point the second University crew led by about a length of open water. A stiff cross-wind blowing throughout the course prevented smooth rowing.
The orders of the crews were:
Second University crew--Stroke, Richardson; 7, P. Withington; 6, Hooper; 5, Smith; 4, Waite; 3, Loring; 2 Forster; bow, Whitney; cox., King.
Freshman crew--Stroke, Newton; 7, Metcalf; 6, Strong; 5, Higginson; 4, Leslie; 3, Balch; 2, Richardson; bow, Wiggins; cox., Voorhees.
