Drinking Fountain Placed in Union

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

During the April recess a drinking fountain was built in the main hallway of the Union towards the Periodical Room. The fountain is a memorial to Thomas Simms Bettens '74 and bears the following inscriptions: "He taught the classics with distinction for twenty-eight years in a secondary school in New York City and won the respect and affection of his pupils by his cheerful patience, justice, and hopeful sympathy. He was simple in his desires, sincere and unaffected in friendship, modest in all relations. This fountain is the gift of his boys, including graduates of Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia Universities."
