NORTHFIELD CONFERENCE

To be Held from July 2 to July 12.--Nature and Size of Conference.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The annual Northfield Conference for colleges in the East will be held at Northfield, Mass., from July 2 to July 12. The date is fixed, as in former years, so that the conference may begin the day after the Harvard-Yale boat-race at New London, which this year occurs on July 1.

The Northfield Conference is a conference among college men upon matters which are closely related to the religious life and welfare of each University, upon the best means of furthering Christian activities among students, and a frank presentation of the claims of Christianity upon the various professions and callings which students are likely to enter.

About 1000 men ordinarily attend this conference. The mornings and evenings are given over to the business of the conference, but the afternoons are devoted to athletics of one sort or another, such as an intercollegiate baseball series, a tennis tournament, track meets, swimming, boat-races, and walking.

The speakers, at the large morning and evening meetings are always men who are well acquainted with religious problems in the Universities, and who have taken an active interest in helping to solve them. Among the more prominent speakers in the past have been Mr. J. R. Mott, associate general secretary of the International Y. M. C. A.; R. E. Speer, travelling secretary of the Volunteer Movement for Foreign Missions; Dr. H. S. Coffin, of New York; E. C. Carter '00; Bishop William Lawrence '71; Dr. John Kelman, of Edinburgh; Professor E. I. Bosworth, of Oberlin College; Rev. J. T. Stone, of Baltimore.

Northfield is situated in a beautiful portion of the Connecticut Valley in northern Massachusetts. It is built on the high hills that rise from the Connecticut River, and from these there is a fine view of the surrounding country. The delegates are lodged according to preference, either in tents, or in one of the buildings of the Northfield Seminary, which are vacated before the opening of the conference.

Last year there were about 50 delegates who went from Harvard, another year some 80 went. The expenses, including car-fare, board, lodging, and program fee, do not exceed $20 for the entire time. The conference is open to all members of the University. Those who desire to attend the conference should send their names at once to Phillips Brooks House.
