Three crews from the University and two from the Freshman squad were launched on the river yesterday for the first time this year. Although it was feared when the Charles was dammed up that the ice would not leave the river until late in the spring, the crews last year had their first row only two days earlier. The floats at the Newell boathouse were down, and it is expected that the launches will be in commission by the first of next week.
All the crews rowed up-stream above the Stillman Infirmary in short stretches, but did not remain out long because of the cold wind. The University crew went out for the first time in the new English boat received last fall from Sims & Son, of Putney, England which was presented by W.C. Baylies '84. A temporary change was made in the boat, Hooper rowing 4 in place of Bacon who was absent. Coach Wray supervised the work of the University crews from his single and spent considerable time on the first Freshman boat.
The crews rowed in the following order:
First University--Stroke, Sargent; 7, Waid; 6, R. Cutler; 5, L. Withington; 4, Hooper; 3, Faulkner; 2, Lunt; bow, E. Cutler; cox., Blagden.
Second University--Stroke, Richardson; 7, Smith; 6, Forster; 5, P. Withington; 4, Eaton; 3, Whitney; 2, Waite; bow, Ellis; cox., King.
Third University--Stroke, Shillito; 7, Marvin; 6, Peabody; 5, Beane; 4, Hanfstaengl; 3, Macleod; 2, Loring; bow, Jowett; cox., Fales.

Second Freshman--Stroke, Trumbull; 7, Anderson; 6, McCabe; 5, Deane; 4, Houston; 3, Sargent; 2, Hunnewell; bow, Farnsworth; cox., Knowles.
