WINTER SPORTS' PROGRAM

Summary of Work Begun and Planned in Various Branches of Athletics

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

For the benefit of men who desire to take part in some form of organized sport during the winter, the following summary of the varied opportunities for athletic activity is given:

Track

The regular winter track work will begin directly after the Christmas recess. A field event competition may possibly be held in the Baseball Cage late in December, as last year. Coach Quinn will have charge of the field event men in the Baseball Cage and the track event men will practice under the direction of Coach Donovan in the Gymnasium and on the board track on Holmes Field.

The B. A. A. meet will take place on February 12. The usual entries from the University and freshman teams will be made. Certain members of the team will also be entered in the track meets in the neighborhood of Boston, such as the Lawrence Light Guards, and in the New York Athletic Club meet later in the season. The annual winter carnival will be held in the Hemenway Gymnasium early in March. The inter-dormitory relay races will be run off and handicap competitions will be held in the regular track and field events. Cups will be awarded for first and second places.

The outdoor work will begin as early as the weather condition will permit, probably about the middle of April.

Hockey

The University hockey squad has started preliminary practice on Soldier Field. Until the ice forms the squad will play association football. When the ground freezes the hockey rinks that are being prepared in the Stadium will be flooded, and at that time the Freshman candidates will be called out. Immediately after the Christmas recess the scrub hockey teams will be organized and soon afterwards upper-class captains will be appointed. The games of the upper-class championship series will be watched and men who do especially good work will be taken onto the University squad.

Water Sports

Candidates for the University swimming, water polo and diving tams will be called out in two weeks. Regular practice will be held twice a week in the Westmorly tank and once a week at the Brookline Swimming club. About the middle of January trials will be held to pick the University and Freshman relay and swimming teams. Sometime before the mid-year period there will be an exhibition in swimming and diving and a water polo game. The chief meet that the Freshman team will take part in is with the Yale freshmen. The University teams will take part in several important contests after the mid-year examinations, closing their season with the Princeton and Yale meets.

Gymnastics

The novice gymnastic meet will be held on December 16. This is the only competition in gymnastics that will be held entirely within the University. Dr. Sargent has offered a cup to the winner of the greatest number of points. Regular practice is being held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays under the direction of G. F. Evans 3G., ad C. L. Shrader. After Christmas the University gymnastic team will be chosen and will hold about ten exhibitions and meets ending with the intercollegiate contest in March. If sufficient interest is shown a Freshman gymnastic team will be organized.

Fencing

The work of the candidates for the fencing team will consist of instruction by M. Leslavay, fencing master to the French Army, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and additional practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Fencers' Club of the University will hold about two meets a month during the winter beginning after the Christmas recess. On the first Saturday of each month men are invited to take part in the B. A. A. fencing meets. The inter-class tournament will be held shortly after the mid-year examinations. The members of the winning team will be awarded the St. Gaudens Cups. As a result of this tournament the University team will be chosen which will hold several important competitions closing its season with the intercollegiates early in April.

Rowing

Candidates for the University and Freshman crews will begin their regular work after the mid-year examinations but Coach Wray will be in the boathouse beginning directly after the Christmas recess to help any candidates for the University or Freshman crews who report for voluntary work. Practice on the machines and in the tank will continue until the river is open. coach Wray will have the general supervisions of all the crews and will coach the University crew. E. C. Bacon '10, will look after the Freshman squad which will be under the control of Coach Stephenson and Coach Brown.

Baseball

Baseball practice for the University squad will commence about the last week in February and for the Freshman squad a little earlier. But all men who intend to try for the University team, who were not on the University squad or the Freshman team last year, will be called out two weeks earlier. It is probable also that the pitchers will begin their work during the mid-year period. Outdoor practice will begin as soon as the weather will permit and an early start will be made in the Leiter Cup series
