REVIEW OF LACROSSE SEASON

Prospects for Next Year.--A.H. Cochrane '09 Elected Captain.

At a banquet given the members of the University lacrosse team last evening, A.H. Cochrane '09 was elected captain for next year. Cochrane played second defense on his Freshman team, and third defense last year on the University team. This year he was placed at first defense, where he played throughout the season. He had had no experience in the game before entering College. A silver cup was presented at the dinner to Mr. F.C. Blank, of Johns Hopkins University, who has coached the team this year, and each member of the team was given a gold medal. The team was also awarded the intercollegiate trophy cup, which will remain in Harvard's posession for one year.

This season has been the most successful that the lacrosse team has ever had, and it is the first time in six years that Harvard has won the Northern Intercollegiate League championship. The season began with the southern trip during the April recess. On this trip five games were played, with some of the best teams in the country. Annapolis was defeated 7 to 1, and all the other teams held to exceptionally low scores. Johns Hopkins, the champion team of the Southern Intercollegiate League, was held to its low score of the season, 6 to 3. Harvard made an excellent showing in this game, considering that it was the team's first game of the season, while Johns Hopkins had played practice games for over a month.

In the first of the league championship games, Cornell was defeated in an exciting extra-period contest, 15 to 11. The feature of the game was Harvard's great uphill fight, the score at the end of the first half being 7 to 3 in Cornell's favor. This is the first time that Harvard has won from Cornell in lacrosse since 1902. One week later, the team defeated Columbia at New York 10 to 0, and in the deciding championship game a victory was scored against Hobart last Friday on Soldiers Field, 3 to 1. A game with the University of Toronto, the Canadian champions, was to have been played yesterday, but it was thought that it would prove too severe a strain on the men after the hard game with Hobart, and the contest was cancelled.

The prospects for a winning team next year are exceptionally good. Of the 17 men who played in league games this year, only five, Captain B.M. Vance, L.D. Cox, C.L. Furber, J.S. Irvin, and P.L. Mueller, graduate. The remaining twelve will be eligible again next year.--enough to compose an entire team of veterans. There is also available material on this year's Freshman team, and there are several good men on the second team. The chances, therefore, for securing another championship in lacrosse are excellent.

Following is the final standing of the Northern Intercollegiate League:   Won.  Lost.  Percent. Harvard,  3  0  1.000 Cornell,  2  1  .667 Hobart,  1  2  .333 Columbia,  0  3  .000
