In one of the most sensational baseball games ever played on Yale Field, the Freshman team broke even with the Yale freshman after fifteen innings, the game being called on account of darkness with the score 2 to 2. The game was a pitcher's battle from the very start, and had it not been for fielding errors, neither side would have scored. McKay pitched the entire game for the Freshmen, allowing but few hits and striking out 15 men. Yale used two pitchers, Carr and Tommers, and it was not until the second man was put in the eighth, that Harvard scored.
The first score of the game was made by Yale in the fifth inning when Daly singled, stole second, and got home on a wild throw and a squeeze play which he worked with Badger. Harvard tied in the eighth when J. Sweetser singled. A. Sweetser forced him out at second, stole a base, went to third on Twitchell's grounder and scored on a wild pitch. There were no more runs until the twelfth, when Rogers knocked out a single. He reached second when Reilly dropped Taylor's fly, took third on a wild pitch, and got home when Tommers threw wide to first after McLaughlin's hit. Yale evened the score again in her half of the twelfth with one out. Martin got his base on balls, took second on Stillwell's sacrifice and came in. Left on bases--Harvard 5, Yale 7. Sacrifice hits--Hann, Badger, Lilley, Stolen bases--Daly 2, Martin, McIntyre, Stillwell, A. Sweetser, Twitchell, Double play--Hann to Twitchell. Bases on balls--Off McKay, 1; off Carr, 2; off Tommers, 2; Struck out--By McKay, 15; by Carr, 7; by Tommers, 7. Hit by pitched ball--Martin. Wild pitch--Tommers. Umpire--Merrick. Time--3h. *Batted for Carr in the seventh.
