HANOVER, N. H., May 19, 1908--Dartmouth defeated the University baseball team in an exciting game today by a score of 6 to 4. Harvard batted much better than in previous games, hitting hard to the outfield, and with the exception of the second inning Hicks pitched excellent ball. There were no sensational plays, but Hall played a strong game at first.
In the first inning Harvard scored on Harvey's two-base hit to left field and a wild pitch. In the second, Dartmouth secured four of the five hits. Simons fumbled Hobart's grounder, and the next man singled. Brady sacrificed, putting men on second and third base, and Emerson singled to centre, bringing in two runs. Hicks passed Conroy, and Schildmiller's short single to right filled the bases again. Glaze flied out to Aronson, and Leonard, the next man up, hit hard to left. The ball took a bad bound on the running track, Lanigan threw wild to third, and three men scored. Mitchell was out on a fly to right field. Dartmouth's last run was made in the sixth inning, when Hobart singled and, with Eaton's sacrifice and a wild pitch, Hobart came home.
With the score 6 to 1 in the eighth inning, Harvard began a rally. Hicks led off with a single to centre, and was followed by Leonard's hit. Harvey got to first on Eaton's error and filled the bases. Lanigan then came to bat and lined out a clean single, and with a wild throw by Mitchell to third, Harvard scored three runs. Aronson struck out, Currier hit to Brady, who threw Lanigan out at the plate, and Simons fouled. Glaze struck out Hall and Kemble went out on a grounder. Pounds, batting for Hicks, ended the game by striking out.
The summary: Earned runs--Harvard 1, Dartmouth 1. Left on bases--Harvard 5, Dartmouth 2. Two-base hits--Harvey, Kemble, Leonard. Sacrifice hits--Eaton, Brady. Stolen bases--Currier 2, Schildmiller. Time--2h. Game with Andover at 4 o'clock. The University baseball team will play Andover on Soldiers Field this afternoon at 4 o'clock. The line-up of the team will be the same as in yesterday's game with the exception that Slater will pitch. Andover has had an unsuccessful season, but at its best is a strong team. It played a good game against Yale, the latter team winning by a 3 to 0 score. It has defeated Vermont, 10 to 2, and the Yale freshmen; but has lost to Princeton 1911, Villanova, Boston College, and Bates. Brown, who will pitch for Andover, is a very good man.
