Dartmouth was defeated by the University track team in the dual meet on Soldiers Field Saturday by the score of 68 points to 19. The Dartmouth team proved much stronger than had been expected, and in several cases won events which had previously been conceded to Harvard. The university team, on the other hand, showed weaknesses in the events in which it was thought to be the strongest, as for instance the quarter and half-mile. As a result of the hard rains during the past week the track was rather heavy and slow, and a downpour, which came just before the 220-yard hurdles and 220-yard dash were run off, left the track in very poor condition and caused slow time in these two events.

Dartmouth secured 6 first, 5 second, and 4 third places to Harvard's 7 first, 8 second, and 9 third places. The University team does not seem to be in as good condition as last year at this time, a fact which cannot be laid to the weather or lack of competition. E. K. Merrihew '10 was not allowed to start at all; F. M. deSelding '10 ran with a sore ankle; H. Watson '10 was beaten in slow time compared to that he made in the Harvard-Yale Freshman dual meet last year; and P. C. Lockwood '08 has by no means reached his standard of former years.

With the Yale meet only a week away the showing of the University team was on the whole discouraging. At this stage it looks as if the meet to decide the possession of the nine-year cup would go to Yale by ten points, in fact there is nothing in sight to alter that statement. Yale's decisive victory over Princeton Saturday shows what can be done by a team that in handicapped by the loss of Butler and Stevens, two of the fastest sprinters in the country. Stevens will in all probability run against Harvard on Saturday.

Captain A. B. Shaw of Dartmouth continued his record performances in the 120-yard hurdles, winning from W. M. Rand '09 by three yards. The time, 15 1-5 seconds, was the equal of the world's record held by A. C. Kraenzlein of Pennsylvania, but was not allowed, as Shaw knocked over the first two hurdles. Third place went to A. B. Mason '08, who finished about a yard behind Rand.

The 100-yard dash was a disappointment from the Harvard standpoint. Sherman of Dartmouth won in 10 1-5 seconds, nearly a yard ahead of Lockwood, who barely beat out Hawley of Dartmouth. Captain Dodge failed to place. In the 220-yard dash it was thought best not to start Captain Dodge, as the muddy track made the risk of mishap too great. This event was also won by Sherman in the slow time of 22 3-5 seconds. Hawley was second and T. S. Blumer '10 was third.

Harvard secured first and third places in both the mile and two-mile. The mile was won by H. F. Miller, Jr., '08, who took the lead at the start and gradually increased it during the race, winning in 4 minutes, 36 1-5 seconds. Barstow of Dartmouth was second and E. L. Viets '10 third. The two-mile was won by M. S. Crosby '08 in the slow time of 10 minutes, 11 1-5 seconds, after much changing of leaders and a fast spurt the last half lap. Walker of Dartmouth came in second three yards behind Crosby, and R. E. Dole '10 was third.

The 220-yard low hurdles was undoubtedly the best race of the day. Shaw led for about half the distance by a good margin, but weakened and was passed by both G. P. Gardner, Jr., '10 and W. M. Rand '09. Gardner finished strong and in excellent form three yards ahead of Rand in 25 2-5 seconds, very good time considering the fact that the track had just received a drenching and was very soft.

In the 440-yard dash Evans of Dartmouth gained a lead on the first stretch and won in 51 4-5 seconds by a narrow margin, with F. M. deSelding '10 second. M. B. Van Brunt '08 was a close third.

The 880-yard run went to W. F. Whitcher '09, in 2 minutes, 3 seconds, with H. Watson '10 second, and Carns of Dartmouth third. Much credit is due G. W. Ryley '10 who acted as pace maker and led the squad for nearly the whole distance before giving in to those who won places. Ryley came in fourth.

In the field events Harvard took all three places in the shot-put and high jump. The shot-put was won by B. T. Stephenson, Jr., '08 with a put of 42 feet, 11 inches. L. W. Bangs '08 was second and C. C. Little '10 was third. S. C. Lawrence '10 won the pole-vault at 11 feet, 8 7-8 inches, being 8 inches higher than he ever did before. J. L. Barr '10 was second and E. L. Parker '10 third.

The high jump went to Palmer of Dartmouth with 5 feet, 10 5-8 inches, the Dartmouth record. C. E. Roosevelt '09 did not jump because of a sprained ankle. R. E. Somers '08 was second with 5 feet, 9 1-2 inches and R. P. Pope '10 third with 5 feet 8 1-2 inches. Sherman of Dartmouth got his third first place in the broad jump, in which he jumped 22 feet, 4 inches. Gray of Dartmouth was second and C. C. Little '10 third. Much credit belongs to E. H. Ruch '10 for winning the hammer-throw against men so much heavier than he. His throw was 129 feet, 5 inches. Johnson and Pevear of Dartmouth took second and third places respectively.
