Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
In a splendidly contested race, the University crew defeated Annapolis on the Severn last Wednesday, leading at the finish by half a length. The winning time was 10m. 31s., and the time of the Navy crew was 10m. 33s.
The race was started up stream on account of the wind; and through a misunderstanding the gun was fired before the University crew was set for the start. The Navy crew accordingly got away first, and rowing nearly 40 to the minute, soon had a lead of over half a length, when the stroke was slowed down to 37. Harvard, rowing between 33 and 34 to the minute, spurted time after time to regain the lost distance; but by raising the stroke whenever the lead was threatened, Annapolis maintained her advantage until close to the finish. At the mile post the University crew seemed to have recovered from the surprise of the start, and did its best work of the day, rowing easily and spacing well. At the last quarter mile mark the hard work and high stroke began to tell heavily on the Navy crew, and the lead gradually decreased. A short distance from the finish the University crew pulled up and swept by the mark with a lead of half a length.
The orders:
Annapolis--Stroke, Kinkaid; 7, Richardson; 6, Rockwell; 5, McKee; 4, Bagg; 3, Leighton; 2, Ainsworth; bow, Davis; cox., Roberts.
Harvard--Stroke, Sargent; 7, Richardson; 6, Bacon; 5, Waid; 4, Lunt; 3, Severance; 2, Fish; bow, Faulkner; cox., Blagden.
