At a meeting of the Athletic Committee, held yesterday afternoon, Perey Duncan Haughton '99 was appointed head coach of the University football team for next season. Mr. Haughton was unanimously chosen for the position by the Football Committee after careful and extended consideration and, upon ratification by the Athletic Committee, the position was offered to Mr. Haughton and accepted by him.
The Football Committee which made this choice was appointed by Captain Burr and approved by the Athletic Committee, and consists of G. R. Fearing '93, W. F. Garcolon L.'95, J. W. Farley '99, P. D. Haughton '99, A. Marshall L.'04, M. L. Newhall '08, and Captain F. H. Burr '09.
Haughton played on the University football team in 1896, 1897, and 1898. In 1897 he played fullback, but both of the other years his position was at right tackle. The last team on which he played defeated Yale 17 to 0. He was also very prominent in baseball while in, College, playing on the University team from 1896 to 1899, inclusive. He was captain in 1899. In his Freshman year, he pitched, played first base the next year, second base in 1898, and first base again his last year.
After graduating from College, Haughton coached the Cornell football team for two years, turning out a victorious team in his second year. He has also held the national racquet championship and for several years has been prominent as assistant coach of our football teams.
Other appointments by the Athletic Committee consisted of W. F. Garcelon L.'95 as graduate treasurer, H. S. Thompson '99 as graduate manager for the current year, and H. V. Amberg '08 as head coach of the University basketball team for this winter. The hockey game against St. Paul's School for this afternoon was also ratified.
