SENSATIONAL FOOTBALL GAME

Bates Defeated, 18 to 0, by Fast Play.--100-Yard Run by Corbett.

In a game full of long runs and spectacular plays the University football team defeated Bates yesterday afternoon by the score of 18 to 0, the first time in four years that Bates has failed to score. Corbett's sensational run from Harvard's 5-yard line the length of the field for the second touchdown was the feature of the game. He was given good interference, but it was by dint of its own fast work that he was able to go through the whole Bates team and to outstrip Cobb, the quarterback. White at left halfback put up a hard, fast game and just after the second touchdown got clear on a tackle play and made a run of thirty-six yards before he was downed. The work of the quarterbacks of both teams was of a high order, and many long gains were made in running back kicks. Cobb was the backbone of the Bates team, and on one play had gone twenty-five yards when Cutler brought him down by a beautiful tackle.

Although the University team had little difficulty in gaining its distance during the second half Bates made long gains through the centre of the Harvard line. Cutler had trouble getting off his forward passes and worked only one with success during the game. Nourse and Crowley played well, and in the backfield Corbett and Smith were good ground gainers. Leslie at right halfback played well for his first game and should prove a valuable man.

Harvard's first two touchdowns were made in the first eight minutes of play after Hoar had blocked Kearney's punt on the Bates 20-yard line. Harvard got the ball on the 15-yard line, Corbett went around left end for seven yards and White made four yards through left tackle. Corbett tried right guard for two yards and Smith carried the ball through the same place for the first touchdown. Burr kicked the goal. Kearney kicked off again to Corbett who picked the ball up on the 5-yard line and with splendid interference ran the whole length of the field for the second score. Burr again kicked the goal. On the next kick-off Cutler ran back seventeen yards, and on the next play White ran the ball from the Harvard 27-yard line to the opponent's 47-yard line. Nourse recovered Cutler's forward pass which Crowley was unable to get. Harvard was penalized fifteen yards for holding, and on the next play Cobb caught Cutler's onside kick on Bates' 16-yard line. Bates punted to Cutler, and Burr's forward pass netted twenty yards. Cutler fumbled Kearney's punt on Harvard's 20-yard line, and the ball was in the possession of Bates when time was called for the first half.

The playing in the second half was more ragged, and both teams were repeatedly penalized. Burr kicked off to Kearney, who returned the ball to Cutler on the 48-yard line. Corbett and Smith made twenty yards on three line plunges, and Crowley recovered an onside kick on Bates' 8-yard line. From there Smith went across the line for the last touchdown. Burr kicked the third goal. Kearney kicked off to Smith, who ran the ball back to the 35-yard line. Burr returned the ball to Cobb on Bates' 40-yard line, where his fumble was recovered by White. Cobb ran twenty yards on Cutler's onside kick, and then made eighteen yards through the line. Kearney's drop kick from Harvard's 28-yard line failed and Cutler punted out to Cobb. Bates made twenty yards on a forward pass around right end, but failed to gain through McGuire, and lost the ball on downs. The calling of time left Harvard with the ball on the Bates 25-yard line.
