FIRST BUMPING RACES TODAY

This afternoon the first of the interdormitory bumping races will be rowed downstream over a one and three-eighths mile course, starting at the long stretch above the Boylston street bridge beyond the second bend, and finishing between the boathouse and the range flags placed on the opposite bank. The races will be rowed off in two divisions, starting at 3.30 and 4 o'clock respectively. The divisions of the crews and the order in which they will start are as follows:

First Division--1, Claverly; 2, Randolph; 3, Mount Auburn Street; 4, Beck-Hampden-Fairfax; 5, Thayer; 6, Second Mount Auburn Street.

Second Division--1, Matthews; 2, Weld; 3, College House; 4, Perkins; 5, Russell-Ware; 6, Outsiders.

Rules and Regulations.

The crews will line up for the start 90 feet apart from bow to stern, and the starting positions will be indicated by buoys, placed in the river at the proper intervals. Number one in each division will be farthest downstream. A series of three shots will be fired for a starting signal. Between the first and second shots there will be two minutes, and between the second and third one minute. The third shot will be the signal for the start. Referees will be stationed along the shore, and bumps will be signalled either through a megaphone or by a pistol shot. As soon as the signal is given, the bumping crew and the crew bumped will drop out.

It is important that the coxswains study the chart of the river and observe the rules. All bumps must be made on the outside. Each crew must keep to the inside course in rounding a curve, to give the crew behind a chance to bump. A crew disregarding this rule will be considered bumped.

All men must report at the boathouses, dressed to row, promptly at 2.45 o'clock. The first division will be started promptly at 3.30, and any crew not at its buoy by that time will be considered out of the race. There will be two days of bumping races, after which the four best crews will be picked for a one and one-half mile straight-away race.

Development of Crews.

During the past two weeks the crews as a whole have been developing slowly. The best crews on the river, in the opinion of the coaches, are at present Claverly, Mount Auburn Street, Second Mount Auburn Street, and Randolph. The race between the Claverly and the Randolph crews should be close, and also that between the Mount Auburn Street and the Beck-Hampden crews.

Filley Cup to be Competed For.

The Filley Cup, presented by B. A. G. Fuller '00 in the autumn of 1906 as a perpetual challenge cup to be competed for annually, and to be held by the winner for one year, will again be awarded to the winning crew this year. This cup has been won by Claverly for the last two years, and the same crew seems likely to repeat its success.
