The first concert in Mr. Arthur Whiting's series of expositions of chamber music will be given on Tuesday evening, October 27, at 8 o'clock, in the Lecture Hall of the Fogg Art Museum. It will be open only to officers and students of the University, and there will be no charge of admission.
The program, to be rendered by Mrs. Charles Rabold and Mr. Whiting, will consist of old Italian, Irish, and Swedish folk-song and songs by Grieg and Brahms. This program, beginning the second year of a four-years course of classical and modern chamber music, is part of a series arranged by a number of persons interested in musical education, who feel that American universities do not afford sufficient opportunities for developing the musical taste of those of their members who are not especially devoted to musical studies. In order, therefore, to encourage an intelligent appreciation of music among young men who have a normal sense of its beauty, they have united on the following proposals:
1. That a uniform series of eight monthly expositions of classical and modern chamber music be given in Eastern universities and colleges in the academic year 1908-1909 by Mr. Whiting and assistants.
2. That the heads of music departments of the colleges in which these expositions are given, shall act as an advisory committee with Mr. Whiting.
3. That a sum of money be contributed by individuals for the necessary expenses.
The treasurer is Mr. C. O. Brewster '79, 26 Liberty street, New York City.
