The announcement of opportunities for social service work has just been published by the Social Service Committee of Phillips Brooks House. It is now ready for distribution to all who are interested in social service activities. Copies may be obtained at Brooks House.
The announcement gives complete information concerning the following organizations which have charge of social and philanthropic work and desire the co-operation of students in the University: Associated Charities of Boston, Charity Building, 43 Hawkins street, Boston; Boston Children's Aid Society, 43 Hawkins street; Associated Charities of Cambridge, Grant Building, 671 Massachusetts avenue; Boys' Department of the Boston Young Men's Christian Association; Cambridge Young Men's Christian Association; Civic Service House, 112 Salem street, Boston; Denison House, 93 Tyler street, Boston; Elizabeth Peabody House, 87 Poplar street, Boston; Ellis Memorial Club, 12 Carver street, Boston; Hale House, including Parker Memorial, Garland street, Boston; Cambridge Prospect Union and Social Union; Roxbury Neighborhood House, 858 Albany street, Boston; South End Industrial School, Bartlett street, Boston; St. Mary's House for Sailors, East Boston.
The purpose of the Social Service Committee is to acquaint students in the University with the various philanthropic enterprises in Cambridge and Boston. It aims to bring together the opportunities for philanthropic work and the men who wish to do such work, and no further obligation is required of those who engage in it than the honorable carrying out of the work they undertake. In choosing the work in which he is to engage, the student is not limited to the few activities of which he may happen to know, but the whole field of charities is open to him.
The various branches of activity carried on by the committee are in charge of the following men: chairman, A. G. Cable '09; clothing collection, J. Curtiss '09; deputation, P. King '09 and L. C. Seaverns '10; entertainment troupes, H. F. Nash '09 and S. B. Steel '11; assignment, P. W. Carter '10; boys' clubs, A. Gregg '11, G. Swan '09, and L. Drew '11; home libraries, T. M. Gregory '10; juvenile court, G. W. Hallowell '10; industrial schools, A. Beane Sp.; assistant graduate secretary, A. L. Thayer '04; graduate secretary, J. M. Groton '09; graduate advisor, C. W. Birtwell '82. The members of the committee will be at Phillips Brooks House at the following hours, and will be glad to see any men who desire further information: A. G.
