The Springfield game last year was a narrow escape. Springfield scored first after ten minutes of play in the second half by blocking two kicks in succession. Harvard succeeded in scoring shortly after, and won the game by a goal from the field. No one left the Stadium with any doubt but that Springfield had unquestionably the better team, but the fortune of the game went against them and they lost a well-deserved victory.
Newspaper abbreviations deprive the Springfield team from their complete name. The Training School from which they come devotes its energies to training men to fill positions in Y. M. C. A. work throughout the country. Much attention is paid to physical culture and gymnastic work of all kinds, and many of the students on graduation step into positions as athletic instructors in the Association's houses. The results of such a general all-around athletic training were marked last year, particularly in developing the new game of forward passes, onside kicks, and open formations to a high degree of efficiency. Such was the case last year and we are ready to expect the same today.
The CRIMSON is not ready, however, to expect the same exhibition from the University team as last year. The season has progressed to that point where a sturdy defense and a powerful offense are necessary to win games. If hard, lively work will bring victories, no fears need be entertained for this year's team. It is beyond the memory of the present board when a scrimmage has been held during the week of over an hour with only five minutes intermission as was the case last Tuesday. The results of this strenuous work should be apparent today.
