The scrimmage between the first and second teams yesterday afternoon was the longest practice held this year, lasting over an hour. The work was aimed primarily at strengthening the defence of the University team, which has shown need of improvement in the last two games. The results were fairly satisfactory, the first team twice holding the second practically on the goal line, less than half a yard intervening between the ball and the line. There is still great room for improvement, however, Minot being able to gain through the University team's line yesterday almost at will.
The first team scored a touchdown on the second eleven in the first ten minutes of play, but after a five-minute intermission the second team put up a great fight and, after a series of well-executed forward passes from Page to Rogers and with the aid of Minot's hard line plunging, went over the first team's goal line for a touchdown. The ball was frequently given to one team in the other's territory to work up the University team's defensive and offensive strength. Just before the second team's score Minot went over the goal line on a line play but the official declared the ball not over, and Sprague punted out to the second team on the 25-yard line. In the playing which followed, Leslie on the first team put up a brilliant game and made forty-five yards in three line plunges at the end of the scrimmage. Cate at quarterback put a good deal of snap into the work of the second team, and Minot's playing was excellent.
The first team was given the ball only a few times, and was coached principally on the defence, particularly on blocking forward passes. The first touchdown was made after Fish had blocked Gilbert's punt on the second team's 25-yard line. Forchheimer went through left guard for four yards and White made three yards more through the same place. Corbett made a pretty run around right end for ten yards, and after White had made three yards on a line play, Forchheimer was pushed through centre for a touchdown. Burr kicked the goal. After the second team had gone down the field to the first team's goal line and Minot's touchdown had been disallowed, Sprague punted out. Overson recovered a forward pass on the first team's 26-yard line and Rogers on a forward pass from Page carried the ball to the 12-yard line. On a similar pass, which Page got off extremely well, Rogers covered the remaining distance and made a touchdown.
