The University hockey team won its first game of the intercollegiate series last Saturday evening by defeating Columbia at the St. Nicholas Rink, by the score of 14 to 1. Columbia was outclassed from the start and was far surpassed both in speed and in knowledge of the game. After the first few minutes of play the team was almost helpless before the attack of the University forwards. Had it not been for the good work of Murphy, Columbia's goal, the score would have been even larger. The work of the University team was particularly good for the first game of the season, as the team play was excellent and the passing and shooting were accurate.

During the first half ten goals were made in quick succession. In this half all but two of Columbia's shots were inaccurate and these two were neatly stopped by Washburn.

In the second half the University team slowed down considerably and Columbia succeeded in scoring about the middle of the half when Mackenzie shot their one goal. For the University team, Pell then scored twice and Newhall and Irving made one more goal apiece.

The summary follows: HARVARD.  COLUMBIA. Pell, l.e.  r.e., King, Jenkins Hicks, Paine, l.c.  r.c., Shafer Rumsey, Irving, r.c.  l.c., Mackenzie Newhall, r.e.  l.e., Reed Ford, c.p.  c.p., Borschardt Willets, Sampson, p.  p., Barnum Washburn, g.  g., Murphy

Score--Harvard, 14; Columbia, 1. Goals--Pell 5, Hicks 4, Newhall 3, Rumsey, Irving, Mackenzie. Referee--Russell. Umpire--Mackenzie. Time--20-minute halves.
