SHALER MEMORIAL IN UNION

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

At the annual dinner of the Advocate, the suggestion was made that a memorial to Dean Shaler be place in the Union. Since that time three of the College periodicals have endorsed this suggestion editorially, but as far as we can learn, no definite arrangements have been made, either for starting a subscription or choosing a memorial. Unless this is to be left until next year-and such a policy seems unwise-a committee should be chosen to carry the matter through and an opportunity for subscribing should be afforded undergraduates before a large proportion of them finish examinations and leave Cambridge. As the other papers have pointed out, the movement for a memorial should come before another class which knew Dean Shaler is graduated.

There is little need to urge the fitness of the Union for such a memorial. It is firmly established as an important factor in undergraduate life. There is less need to urge a hearty response to any call for subscriptions which may be made. Every man in the University should be glad to do his small part toward bringing future classes into closer touch with the memory of a man who gave to Harvard the best years of a singularly valuable life, and who won the love as well as the respect of countless undergraduates.
