The tournament for the golf championship of the University was begun yesterday at the Oakley Country Club course, with a qualifying round of 18 holes of medal play. Thirty-three contestants started and some good scores were returned, H. H. Wiledr '09, winner of the open Brookline tournament, leading the field with a score of 82. The following eight men qualified for the University cup: H. H. Wilder '09, 82; S. Plummer 3L., 84; F. W. Morgan '10, 84; F. Ingalls 3L., 85; E. W. Clark '07, 86; J. Coe '09, 86; F. W. Kemble '08, 86; W. Hickox '08, 87.
It has been decided to offer a consolation cup (entry fee $1) for the second eight to qualify. Their scores were as follows: P. Grant '08, 89; M. McArthur '10, 89; T. Clark '08, 90; A. W. Ingalls '09, 91; H. Sutphin '07, 91; H. F. McNeil '08, 92; G. Minot '08, 92; H. Green '08, M. Hale 2L., and C. S. Brown, Jr., '08, tied at 93.
The drawings for today's play for the University cup are: Kemble vs. Clark; Coe vs. Hickox; Morgan vs. Wilder; Plummer vs. F. Ingalls.
In the tournament for the consolation cup, lots were drawn for last place, and C. S. Brown, Jr., '08 and H. Green '08 were successful. The drawings for today's play for the consolation cup are Minot vs. A. W. Ingalls; Sutphin vs. T. Clark; McNell vs. Grant; Brown vs. Green.
