The Freshman baseball team defeated Stone's School in an exciting 12-inning game yesterday afternoon by the score of 4 to 3. Everts, who pitched the first four innings, had poor support, and Stone's scored three times in the third inning. In the fourth Captain Lanigan, who had been playing centre field, went into the box, and after that not a man passed first. He was practically invincible, striking out 17 men in eight innings, and allowing only two hits. From the time Lanigan went into the box the game became a pitcher's battle, with the advantage on his side. The pitching of Clay for Stone's was also of a very high order, considering that he had pitched a game on Monday. He struck out 20 men, allowed only seven hits, and proved effective in all tight places, except in the twelfth inning, when Delano hit safely and brought in the winning run. Delano excelled at the bat, getting three hits out of four times up. The batting of the rest of the team was far below the average.
The summary: Stolen bases--Hall, Lanigan, Gardner, Brown. Bases on balls--by Everts 1, by Clay 5. Struck out--by Everts 3; by Lanigan 17; by Clay 20. Wild pitch--Clay. Passed balls--Whittemore 4. Umpire--Bravley. Time--2n. 2m. *Two out when winning run was scored.
