Change in Columbia Crew Yesterday

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

NEW YORK, May 9.--The rowing of the Columbia crew today was somewhat hindered by a strong east wind, but the men rowed well together, and put a great deal of life into their work. Coach Rice was dissatisfied with the work of Starbuck at number 4, and Gillies was substituted for him. The boat seemed to go more smoothly after the change. Several quarter-mile sprints were taken by the crew, in which the men showed good rhythm. Von Saltza has completely recovered from his illness and is rowing a strong oar.

The crew will leave here at 8 o'clock tomorrow morning, arriving in Boston at 1 o'clock. They will stop at the Hotel Lenox. Besides the regular crew, McLean will accompany the men as substitute. The probable order for Saturday's race will be: stroke, Cerussi; 7, Boyle; 6, McKenzie; 5, Voh Saltza; 4, Gillies; 3, Spalding; 2, Jordan; bow, Snevily; cox., Winslow.
