PLANS FOR TRACK WORK

Outlined at Meeting in Union Last Evening.--List of Candidates.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

At a meeting of candidates for the track team held in the Assembly Room of the Union last night 134 men handed in their names as candidates for the various events.

Captain Minot opened the meeting, speaking of the importance of winter work in preparation for the big meets in the spring, and the real fun that can be derived from it. There is an excellent opportunity in this winter work, he said, for every man to find out by experiment to what events he is especially adapted. Plenty of opportunity for competition will be afforded during the winter, as the sprinters, hurdlers, and field-event men will be urged to take part in the open meets in the neighborhood, and special competitions will be arranged for the field events. It is hoped that a big indoor carnival will be held shortly after the B. A. A. meet, in which everybody will have a chance to take part. A number of special events, such as a potato race or a three-legged race, as well as interdormitory relay races, will probably be arranged for this carnival. In the B. A. A. meet on February 16 it is planned to have a relay race between the University team and Yale, in which each man will run 780 yards. As there are very few half-mile runners of known ability on the squad, there will be an unusual opportunity for new men on this relay team. Besides the University relay race there will be a race between the three upper classes and probably a race between the Freshman relay team and the Yale freshmen. In closing Captain Minot urged the men to keep off probation and to keep in good physical condition.

Coach Lathrop, the next speaker, spoke of the strength which a large number of candidates always gives to a team, and emphasized the benefit which every individual derives from regular track work. The coaches are always glad, he said, to help anyone who comes out, whether or not he shows any remarkable ability.

W. A. Colwell spoke on the good sportsmanship of track work and the opportunity for sociability and friendly rivalry. M. H. Stone '07 spoke of the importance of persistent and early training.

Regular daily practice for all events will begin in the Gymnasium on Monday. Squads have been arranged for the following hours: 11 and 12 o'clock in the morning, and 3.30 and 4.30 o'clock in the afternoon. Men may report each day at whatever one of these hours they find most convenient; but as many as possible are urged to come in the morning, as the afternoon hours are usually crowded. Regular daily attendance is essential. The practice consumes only one hour from the time of arriving to the time of leaving the Gymnasium. The work will consist of general exercises with dumbbells and weights, after which the sprinters will practice starts and take short runs on the board track on Holmes Field, the distance men will take road runs, and the field-event men will practice on the floor of the Gym- nasinm and in the basement. Mr. Lathrop will be in the Gymnasium every day except Sunday from 9 to 6 o'clock to advise men who wish to consult him.
