Hon. L. M. Shaw, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, will deliver an address on "Evolution in Self-Government" this afternoon at 4.30 o'clock in the Living Room of the Union.
Secretary Shaw is a speaker of national reputation. During his two successful campaigns for the governorship of Iowa he made addresses which attracted much attention throughout the country because of his sound policy and effective use of facts and statistics. One of his best speeches was delivered during his first term as governor of Iowa, when he was selected to speak at the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the seat of the federal government at Washington on December 12, 1900. His subject was "The Development of the States during the Century" and the address has often been mentioned by those who heard it as a masterful treatment of an inspiring theme. At the present time when Secretary Shaw speaks he is quoted, and his views commented upon by many periodicals throughout the country.
The lecture is open only to members of the Union, and membership tickets must be shown at the door.
