Harvard Prominent in Summer Tennis

During the summer Harvard graduates and undergraduates have been unusually prominent in various tennis tournaments and have made an excellent showing.

In the annual tournament of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, held at Newport, W. J. Clothier '04 won the national championship singles by defeating B. C. Wright ex-'03 in the challenge match. The score was 6-3, 6-0, 6-4. In the final round of the all-comers tournament, Clothier had previously beaten Behr by the score of 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. In the championship doubles H. Ward '98 and Wright successfully defended their title against Hackett and Alexander.

At Southampton, in the annual tournament, Larned and Clothier won the doubles by defeating Wright and Stillman, 6-3, 6-4. M. D. Whitman '99 and Clothier, in the Nahant invitation tournament, beat Watson and Colston, 6-3, 6-2.

In the annual tournament of the Longwood Cricket Club Hackett and Alexander beat Larned and Clothier in five sets, 7-9, 8-6, 6-2, 8-10, 6-3, thus gaining the Eastern doubles championship. In the finals of the single matches Clothier was defeated by Behr.
