University Crew Raced Freshmen

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

RED Top, June 12, 1906.--The University crew was given a time row down stream this afternoon over the four-mile course. No announcement of the time, however, was made. Although a strong head wind was blowing the crew as a whole kept well together and spaced consistently. Morgan, at 3, rowed in better form than he has ever shown in the University shell.

For the first two miles, Filley maintained a stroke of 28, which was raised to 30 just after the Navy Yard was passed. Here the Freshman eight overtook the University crew, racing it to the finish. The Freshmen started about half a length behind, but at the end of a half-mile were a length and a half ahead, rowing 36 strokes to the minute, while the University crew held a stroke slightly over 36. At the three-mile flag the Freshmen were still the same distance ahead, both crews, rowing 32. In the last half-mile the University crew gained half a length and finished just a length behind with a 34 stroke. The Freshmen during the spurt were rowing 36. Some of the men were excited during the final spurt, and did not pull together evenly. This was especially true of the Freshmen who rowed a much higher stroke than was necessary.

This morning all four crews were given light work. They were sent out at 11.45 o'clock, and rowed down stream about a mile and a half returning to Red Top in easy stretches. J. Cutler stroked the Freshman eight-oar and Reece the Freshman four-oar.

J. O. Proctor '01 and R. F. Herrick '90, visited the quarters today, and during the afternoon watched from the launch the work of the crews on the river. In the morning Captain Morse and Coach Kennedy of the Yale crew paid a call on Filley and Coach Wray. Examinations began at 8 o'clock this morning and will continue to be held at that hour in order that the crews may have a short row before luncheon each day.
