This afternoon at 4 o'clock the University baseball team will play its annual game with Bowdoin on Soldiers Field. Greene will pitch for Harvard.
Last year Bowdoin was defeated by a score of 5 to 0, but this year has an unusually strong team. The game is likely, therefore, to be close, with the chances slightly in favor of the University team.
Bowdoin has defeated Brown, one of the Strongest of the college baseball teams, by a score of 7 to 5. This was very early in the season, however. Exeter and Andover have been defeated, 11 to 1, and 5 to 2, respectively. Bowdoin won from the University of Maine by a Score of 5 to 2, but lost to Bates on Decoration Day by a score of 2 to 11. Yesterday afternoon Bowdoin defeated Tufts in a 12-inning game at Medford, 2 to 1. Judging from these scores, especially that of the Andover game, the game today should be very close. The University team, however, has shown continued improvement in the field in the recent games, though the batting is still rather weak.
Yesterday afternoon the University team held a long practice, devoted chiefly to coaching the infield on catching the base runners. This work followed a short batting practice. On the diamond the men at first showed rather poor judgement, but improved later in this respect. The fielding was not as lively as in the recent games, although the throwing to bases, especially from the outfield, was at times very accurate.
