The Faculty of Arts and Sciences voted at its meeting yesterday to offer a degree with distinction in History and Literature to all who may fulfill the requirements as given below.
The candidate must present for approval by the committee as early as possible in his college career, a plan of study which shall comprise at least six courses selected from those offered in History and in Literature. The courses selected must be those not regularly open to Freshmen, and should be so chosen as to come under some general scheme of study of the history and literature either of a period or of a nation.
The candidate will be expected to divide his work about equally between courses in History and courses in Literature; but will ordinarily include the history of Philosophy and the Fine Arts in the country or the period selected for his general field of study.
In order to compete his knowledge of the country or the period chosen, the candidate should pursue a course of general reading in the principal authors of the country or period in question. This general reading, which may conveniently be done during the summer vacations, must in every case be approved and directed by the committee in charge.
Not later than April 1 of his final year of preparation, the candidate must present to the committee a thesis, the subject of which shall have previously been approved, on some special topic within his general field of study. At some subsequent time appointed by the committee the candidate must present himself before them for general examination, either written, or oral, or both, concerning his whole field of study.
A candidate who has satisfied the committee of his proficiency will be recommended by them for the degree with distinction in History and Literature, and will be excused from the final examinations in his Senior year in the courses offered for the degree with distinction.
Juniors, or other candidates for the degree of A.B. in 1907, whose general course of study and of private reading has tended toward the recently established degree with distinction in History and Literature may, consult Professor B. Wendell, chairman of the committee, at Grays 18 on Saturday between 10 and 1 o'clock, and may then enroll themselves as candidates for this degree.
