On Saturday there was a general shake up in the University second crew. J. Lowell '08 and S. B. Swaim '07, who had been rowing 5 on the Sophomore and 7 on the Junior crews respectively were tried in the boat for the first time. G. Bacon, Gill and Corbett did not row. Richards, who had been rowing 6 since the middle of March, was moved to number 2, being superseded at 6 by Swaim. Lowell went in at 5, and Ball rowed 3 as on Friday.
The work consisted in rowing in short stretches up stream about a mile, then down stream as far as the Magazine street beach, and returning to the University boathouse. The crew started out well, but rowed poorly after the first half mile. The boat rocked considerably. Morgan at 8 washed out with his blade at the end of his stroke. At 5 Lowell finished his stroke too soon and did not keep the full strength of his shoulders on the oar long enough. And Ball at 3 often lost the beat of the stroke, as he showed a tendency to shorten the stroke at the catch. These faults were probably due in a large degree to the changes in the crew; but the work of Emmons at 7 and Swaim at 6 was in decided contrast to the poor showing of the other men. The clean form of Swaim was especially creditable as he had been rowing on the starboard side in the Junior boat.
The order:
University second crew--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Emmons; 6, Swaim; 5, Lowell; 4, Warren; 3, Ball; 2, Richards; bow Wiggins; cox., Whitney.
The University crew rowed down stream Saturday afternoon and were accompanied by Coach Wray in a single scull.
