University and 1909 Rowing

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

During the past week the University and Freshman crews have been rowing on the river. The University crew has not improved as much as might be expected from the fact that all the men are experienced oarsmen and were coached throughout the autumn rowing. Special attention has been given during the last few days to the catch and drive through. The men do not stand well off their slides, and several have a tendency to shorten the stroke.

There were no changes yesterday in the order of the first crew. In the second boat Kellogg and Switzer were tried at four and bow respectively. Richards was moved from four to six. The crews rowed up to Watertown Bridge and back in easy stretches.

It is still impossible on criticise the Freshman squad as many of the most promising men have had little experience, and none of the crews have rowed together twice in succession.

The orders:

University crew--Stroke, Filley; 7, Guild; 6, R. Bacon; 5, Richardson; 4, Glass; 3, Flint; 2, Tappan; bow, Wiggins; cox., Blagden.

Second crew--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Emmous; 6, Richards; 5, Warren; 4, Kellogg; 3, Corbett; 2, G. Bacon; bow, Switzer; cox., Arnold.

First Freshman crew--Stroke, Cable; 7, Faulkner; 6, Fitzgerald; 5, Kennard; 4, Crandall; 3, Hanfstaengl; 2, Maloon; bow, E. Cutler; cox., Townsend.

Second Freshman crew--Stroke, J. W. Cutter; 7, Ellis; 6, Weeks; 5, Racker mann; 4, Mulligan; 3; Poor; 2, Williams; bow, Rodman; cox., Simons.
