FAST PLAY IN PRACTICE

The football practice yesterday afternoon was fairly encouraging, for the first eleven scored one goal from the field on the second team in a ten-minute scrimmage, after rushing the ball steadily from their own 55-yard line to within 10 yards of the opposing goal. Six substitutes were played on the first team: Fraser, centre; Warren, right tackle; Hall, quarterback; Lincoln, left half; Lockwood, right half; and Mason, full back. Kennard, who has recovered from a sprained ankle, played in Macdonald's place at right end. Hall tried three drop kicks in the scrimmage, missing two of them on account of poor passes.

In the preliminary practice the first squad line men tried tackling the dummy for the second time this year. After punting practice the first team linemen and substitutes were given a short practice against the charging machine. A few of the heavier men tried making quick starts, and the second team, under the direction of Coach F. H. Nesmith '06, who has recently been appointed, had a short practice of several line plays. Just before the scrimmage, the first team tried the forward pass against a scrub eleven for a short period. Newhall, who has been slightly ill for the last few days, was again on the field. One new man reported, H. P. McLaughlin '09, halfback.

Philippbar kicked off to the first eleven, the ball being run in five yards to the 30-yard line. After two short gains a quarterback kick was tried on which the second team secured the ball on the 45-yard line. Kate at once signalled for a forward pass, but the ball touched the ground and so was given to the opposing team. Lockwood punted, the first eleven regaining the ball after it had been blocked. With the ball in the middle of the field, Lockwood made ten yards and then fumbled; but Burr regained the ball and advanced it five yards to the 45-yard line. Lincoln rushed a few yards in the next scrimmage, and then Mason was given the ball three times in succession, gaining 9 yards on the first two plays and 12 on the third. Lincoln made two more yards through right tackle, downing the ball on the second team's 10-yard line. The next play was fumbled, Warren regaining the ball with a slight loss. Hall at once tried a drop kick which was successful. Two more drop kicks were tried by Hall from the same place, both of which failed on account of poor passing. The ball was then given to the second team in the middle of the field, and a few forward passes tried with little success.
