The Freshman football squad had its first scrimmage Saturday afternoon on Soldiers Field. After the usual preliminaries of signal practice and falling on the ball, teams A and B lined up for a short scrimmage. Later teams C and D were given similar work. As might be expected, so early in the season, the playing of the men was very ragged. This was especially noticeable in the linemen, who failed to make openings for the backs. The work of squad A was most satisfactory. By means of long end runs the backs were able to gain almost at will. On the third play Gilbert, at left half, broke through for a touchdown, while Enos, the other half, made several gains by straight plunges.
Teams A and B lined up as follows:
Team A--l.e., Pierce; l.t., Fish; l.g., Monroe; c., Bowers, Estabrook; r.g., Beaman; r.t., Jordan; r.e., Beard; q.b., S. Brown; r.h., Enos; l.h., Gilbert; f.b., Hoffstot.
Team B--l.e., Watson; l.t., Large, Duhig; l.g., Fletcher, Bigelow; c., Morris; r.g., West; r.t., Coburn; r.e., Wendell; q.b., Parsons; r.h., Jewett, deRham; l.h., Thayer; f.b., Whittemore.
