Nearly 120 candidates for the Freshman football team began work yesterday afternoon on Soldiers Field under the direction of J. L. Derby '08. The practice was very light, consisting principally in passing the ball and in starting when the ball was put in play.
After a short run around the field the men were divided into squads according to the positions for which they are trying. At the suggestion of Captain Foster the linemen were given practice in passing and handling the ball, while those trying for the back field were directed in simple formations. The practice lasted about half an hour in all.
The work of the squad during the next few days will be light, and no scrimmage will take place until the latter part of the week.
