STRONG DEFENSE IN PRACTICE

The most encouraging feature of yesterday's football practice was the defensive strength shown by the first team, composed mainly of substitutes, after the ball had been given three times to the second team on the 20-yard line. On the first try a three-yard gain by Gilder and one of two yards by Greenebaum for the second eleven, carried the ball to the 15-yard line, where Gilder was forced to punt, sending the ball over the goal line for a touchback.

The second team was again given the ball on the 20-yard line, but failed to make a touchdown by direct play. Gilder made two yards through left tackle, but fumbled on the next play, Browne recovering the ball. The first team was penalized five yards for being offside, after which Gilder made seven yards on two line plays. Greenebaum failed to gain and Gilder was thrown for a slight loss. On Gilder's drop kick, which followed, the ball was blocked, but recovered by Kelley for the second team on the eight yard line. After two slight gains Gilder again tried a drop kick, but failed to get the ball, as the pass was too high. Browne, however, secured the ball for the second eleven. With the ball on the 11-yard line, Somes and Greenebaum failed to gain and Gilder was forced back five yards. Greenebaum gained eight yards through right tackle, after which the first team was penalized five yards for being offside. The second team was held for downs on the one-yard line, but after again being given the ball in the same place, worked it over the line in three plays. On the third try, after five minutes of play, the second eleven had advanced the ball 10 yards. At this point the scrimmage was stopped on account of darkness.

Before the scrimmage, Foster and Newhall tried punting, under the direction of Coach Brown, while Gray, Lincoln, Grosvenor, Tweed, Starr and Taylor practiced catching the ball and running it back. The University team linemen had a long, hard practice in blocking and breaking through, under the direction of Coach Blagden. Parker and Newhall kicked several excellent goals from the field, the former from placement and the latter on drop kicks.
