ENCOURAGING FOOTBALL

Spirited Play--Long Punting Practice.--Touchdown Scored on Fumble.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The football practice yesterday was very encouraging, although not quite as snappy as on Wednesday. The weather was warmer and the men showed the effect of the hard work of the past few days. In spite of this, however, every one played with determination and covered his ground well, as was shown by the few long gains made by either eleven.

After about ten minutes the scrimmage resolved itself into an exchange of punts. Frequent changes were made in practically every position and several punters were tried. Leonard and Foster did some very good kicking and Spear broke through several times and was down the field almost as soon as the ends. O'Brien, who played left end in the scrimmage, is very fast and also a strong defensive player. The only gain that has been made around his end in the last three days practice was on a fumbled pass.

At the beginning of the scrimmage, Cunniff kicked off to Starr on the 23-yard line, who ran back 10 yards. On the next play Lincoln broke through and tackled Foster for a loss of four yards. Wendell lost three more and Foster punted to the 38-yard line. After short gains, aggregating 12 yards, Lockwood punted five yards to the centre of the field. From there the first eleven carried the ball by short rushes to the 35-yard line.

After a short rest the second team was given the ball for punting practice. One of Leonard's punts was dropped by Starr on the 40-yard line, and Montgomery, picking up the ball ran the length of the field for a touchdown. Montgomery's work was noticeably good.

The original line-up was: FIRST ELEVEN.  SECOND ELEVEN. O'Brien, l.e.  r.e., Grant Brill, l.t.  r.t., Fultz McFadon, l.g.  r.g., McLeod White, c.  c., Cunniff Parker, r.g.  l.g., Brown Squires, r.t.  l.t., Montgomery Hall, r.e.  l.e., Blair Starr, q.  q., Quigley Wendell, r.h.  l.h., Lincoln Foster, l.h.  r.h., Nesmith Hanley, f.b.  f.b., Lockwood

There will be no scrimmage today and the practice will be very light in preparation for the game with Williams tomorrow.
