SCRIMMAGE IMPROVEMENT

In the scrimmage yesterday afternoon both elevens showed marked improvement, due in part to greater confidence and increased ability to work together. This was true of the linemen especially, although they failed to cover enough ground on punts. The backs were quicker in getting off and used better judgment in choosing openings. All of the men played with more snap and aggressiveness.

At the close of the regular scrimmage several punts were tried in order to give the linemen practice in covering their ground. Coach Kernan supervised a long punting practice, and the kicking as a whole was rather poor. Leonard and Hall, however, did some good work, Leonard especially making some excellent punts.

The only touchdown in the scrimmage was made by the first eleven at the close of eight minutes of play, after the ball had been carried 80 yards in short rushes without a fumble. Cunniff kicked off to Squires on the 23-yard line, who ran back eight yards. Foster gained five yards and Hurley circled left end for 10-yards. Because of a slight strain received in this play Captain Hurley was replaced by Wendell. The ball was then carried down the field with gains averaging between two and three yards until on the third down, with one yard to go, Wendell went over for the touchdown. White failed to kick the goal.

Brill kicked off to Quigley, who caught the ball on the 25-yard line, and ran it back eight-yards. After several short gains Lockwood punted 40 yards to Kempner, who fumbled, and Leary fell on the ball. Lincoln tried an end run, but was tackled by Foster, with a loss of one yard. Nesmith made four yards and time was called with the ball on the first eleven's 22-yard line.
