The University baseball team lost to Holy Cross for the second time this season Saturday afternoon by the score of 9 to 8, in an exciting game, the result of which was undecided until the last inning. In the sixth inning Harvard had a lead of three runs, the score standing 6 to 3, but in the next inning, when Castle was substituted for Coburn, Holy Cross made four runs. The University team, however by making two runs in the last part of the seventh, again took the lead, but the opposing team won the game in the last inning by an opportune two-base hit which scored two men.
Although defeated, the University team played a very satisfactory game. The fielding was consistently good and several brilliant plays were made, especially by the outfield. Kernan excelled in this respect, for he made three difficult catches of long flies, at least one of which would have been good for a home run. In batting the men showed an encouraging amount of confidence, and hit the ball hard. Leonard's home run and Kernan's two hits, one of which started a fine rally in the seventh inning, were the features for the University team.
Coburn's pitching was a little unsteady for the first two innings and the opposing team made three runs. For the next four, however, until he was by Castle, his work was all that could be desired. Castle was hit freely, Holy Cross making six runs off of him in three innings. Holy Cross, first at bat, made one run in the first inning, when Hoey hit past Matthews, was advanced by Reilly and scored on Carrigan's single. In this for Harvard, Kernan made his base balls and Leonard was safe on a wild throw. Both were advanced by a passed ball and scored on Stephenson's hit. Dexter's single then brought in Matthews. In the second inning a base on balls, Barry's three-bagger, and Hoey's single gave Holy Cross two more runs. Kernan and Leonard, in this inning, scored on the latter's fine home run, and Randall came home on errors by Hoey and Spring. In the seventh inning, Barry, Dowd and Ennis all made hits. A passed ball, and Reilly's long home run netted four runs. Kernan and Leonard, for Harvard, each hit safely. Kernan scored on Matthews' single and Leonard on Stephenson's out. Flynn's two-base hit, in the ninth inning, scored Spring and Reilly and won the game for Holy Cross. The score: HARVARD. a.b. r. b.h. p.o. a. e.
