Freshman Crew Goes to New London

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Freshman crew squad will go to New London this afternoon. The men will leave the Square shortly after 2 o'clock and take the 3 o'clock train from the South Station, which is due to arrive at New London at 5.40 o'clock. the shells were sent ahead yesterday morning, and will be ready for use when the men reach Red Top. This year the University squad will occupy the quarters which the Freshmen have used in past years, as they are more comfortable and convenient.

Yesterday, notwithstanding the rainy weather, the crews rowed down to Longwood bridge and returned in easy stretches. The men all seemed in good condition and rowed hard.

As with the University crew, Coach Wray has been hampered throughout the season by not knowing the men. The crew was picked, however, several days before the Beacon Cup races on May 19, and by the Henley Regatta on May 27, it had developed a powerful drive. After their return from Philadelphia the men fell off in their work, but during the last few days they have regained their power and form. Morgan is a valuable man at stroke, and is responsible for the crew's dash. He is ably backed at seven by Amberg, who follows him well and has very good form. Fish at six is also a strong oar. Warren and Fahnestock have been the two weak points in the boat, but lately they have improved very rapidly. On the whole the eight is considerably stronger than last year's Freshman crew, and judging from its fast time in the American Henley has a good chance of defeating Yale on June 29. Onativia and Mason, as substitutes. Coach Bowditch and Managers Smith and Howes will accompany the crews to New London.

The orders yesterday, which will probably not be changed, were as follows:

Freshman eight--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Amberg; 6, Fish; 5, Warren; 4, Richardson; 3, Fahnestock; 2, Despard; bow, Wiggins; cox., Arnold.

Freshman four-oar--Stroke, Ball; 3, Parke; 2, Bacon; bow, Comstock; cox., Whitney.
