The University baseball team defeated Brown yesterday afternoon in a close game by the score of 4 to 2.
For the first seven innings no runs were made by either team, but in the eighth a timely batting rally by Harvard netted four runs and won the game. Up to this inning the game was a pitchers' battle between Coburn and Tift in which Coburn had a slight advantage. Coburn struck out five men in the first seven innings, gave no bases on balls and allowed only two Brown men to reach second base. Tift struck out four men, gave one base on balls and allowed four men to reach second. Both pitchers, up to the eighth inning, were supported by excellent fielding. The infielders of both teams covered their positions thoroughly and the outfielders were sure on catching flies. A feature of the game was the difficult catch by Kernan in the second inning of a long foul by Dickinson. In batting, both nines showed ability to hit consistently, although, except in the eighth inning, most of the hits went directly to the fielders.
In the eighth inning, when the scoring began, Dickinson, for Brown, made a hit and went to second when Elrod was hit by Coburn. Dickinson then scored on a wild throw to first base by Coburn, and Elrod went to third, scoring when Coburn made a careless catch of Stephenson's throw. McCarty, the first man up in the second half of the inning, made a good three-base hit, and scored on Coburn's single. Randall got his base on balls and the bases were filled by Leonard, who was hit by Tift. Matthews then reached first on a fielder's choice and in the same play Hoye made an error which brought home Coburn. Randall scored on Stephenson's long fly to Hamilton and Leonard reached home on Dexter's out. *Paine out for not touching first base in the ninth inning.
