The University baseball team defeated Williams yesterday afternoon in an uninteresting and carelessly played game of six innings by the score of 16 to 1.
The Williams team showed a decided falling off, especially in fielding, over its form in the game with the University team in Philadelphia on April 22. This may be shown by the fact that of the sixteen runs made by Harvard only four were earned, the rest being the result, directly or indirectly, of the opposing team's ten errors. The University team also played a discouraging and listless fielding game, which would have proved disastrous against a strong team. Although this falling off may be attributed in part to a reaction after the Princeton game, at least two of the errors were inexcusable. A redeeming feature was the fine running catch of a long fly by Kernan in the fourth inning. The batting, after the first two innings, when Williams did the better work, was fairly satisfactory, although Westerveld was not as effective as in the first game. The Williams team was held down to two hits by Coburn, who struck out six men and allowed only two bases on balls.
In the third inning Mahar got to first base on an error by Nesbitt; Leonard made a sacrifice hit and was followed by Randall and Matthews, who got to first on errors, Matthews scoring Mahar and Randall. In the next inning Mahar made a home run, bringing in Coburn and Bradbury. Two runs were added in the fifth inning by another error and hits by Kernan and Bradbury. In the sixth two errors and a base on balls, followed by hits by Dexter and Kernan netted five runs. Coburn then made a two-base hit, bringing in Kernan, and scored on a hit by Leonard, who made the last run of the game on another error. Williams' one run, made in this inning, was on an error by Matthews, a hit by Warren, and Harmon's outfield fly.
