BEACON CUP SPRING REGATTA

The class crew championship for the Beacon Cup will be rowed at 3 o'clock this afternoon downstream over the mile and seven-eighths course, commencing at the Longwood Bridge and finishing at the Union Boat Club. The winning crew will enter the American Henley in Philadelphia on May 27. Captain Filley will start the crews and act as referee. The other officials have not yet been appointed.

Judging from the work of the crews during the last week the best chance of victory lies with the Freshman crew. During the last week it has improved rapidly, and in several recent brushes with the University crew has shown endurance and ability to keep up a fast stroke at critical moments. The Seniors and Junior crews are evenly matched. The Seniors have the advantage of having been picked for the last month, but the Juniors, on the other hand, have developed a more powerful stroke.

The crews will row this afternoon in the following order:

Seniors--Stroke, Richmond; 7, Johnson; 6, Webster; 5, Lewis; 4, Lamson; 3, Joralemon; 2, Ober; bow, Swaim; cox., Scully.

Juniors--Stroke, Soule; 7, Switzer; 6, Amory; 5, Cabot; 4, Newhall; 3, White; 2. Shurtleff; bow, Williams; cox., Risley.

Sophomores--Stroke, Gregg; 7, Richards; 6, Swaim; 5, Irving; 4, French; 3, Wiswall; 2, Sortwell; bow, Lane; cox., Ogilby.

Freshmen--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Amberg; 6, Fish; 5, Warren; 4, Richardson; 3, Fahnestock; 2, Ball; bow, Wiggins; cox., Arnold.

Graded Race Yesterday.

In the graded crew race yesterday afternoon, which was rowed upstream over the mile and seven-eighths course, the second Freshman crew easily defeated the Weld graded crew by five lengths and the second Sophomores by eight lengths. The slow time, 10 minutes and 47 seconds, was due to the unfavorable weather conditions. The Freshmen's victory was due to all round superiority which was shown by their smooth form and strong drive at the finish. The graded crew, which had rowed together for the first time on Wednesday, was rough, and did not pull well together. The Sophomores' stroke was short and poorly timed.

University Crews.

Another change was made yesterday afternoon in the order of the University crew. Pleasonton, who has been stroking one of the four-oars, was put in at 4 in place of McLeod, who is no longer a member of the squad.

The orders of the two four-oar crews which were taken out were still provisional. The crews went out without a coxswain, the bow man steering with his fool as the four-oars will row in this way in the American Henley on May 27. Corlett stroked both crews, but the three bow men were different in each case. The second combination, with Bacon, Meier and Lilly seemed the stronger.
